  11. 2.Why Kuk Sool over other types of martial art?

  12. Kuk Sool is a martial arts system rather than a single style and as such, offers much more than most other martial arts.  While you might learn to strike and kick in Tae Kwon Do or Karate, to grapple and throw in Hapkido, Aikido, Judo or Jujitsu, or to use weapons and learn animal forms in Kung Fu, only Kuk Sool offers all of these and more in a single program.

  13. 3.What are the age limits?

  14. Children may start at age 3.  Other than that, you are never too old to begin.

  15. 4.Do I need to be in shape to start training in martial arts?

  16. Absolutely not.  As a white belt, you will begin with the fundamentals that are the basis of all your future training in Kuk Sool.  If you are not “in shape” when you begin, these fundamental forms, techniques and exercises will set you on the right path to fitness, which you may achieve in only a few short months of dedicated practice.

  17. 5.I am not very coordinated.  Can I still learn a martial art?

  18. Anyone can learn a martial art.  We start with the fundamentals, which help you to gain the balance and coordination necessary to proceed to more advanced material.  In addition, each student can advance at his or her own pace, so you never will feel that you are out of your element.

  19. 6.I am self-conscious.  Do you have separate classes for white belts?

  20. Because our school is small, all belt levels practice in the same room at the same time.  However, your instructor will work one on one with you as necessary to make sure that you are learning the material and to correct when necessary.  You will not be asked to perform in front of the class until you feel confident enough to do so.

  21. 7.How often should I come to class?

  22. We encourage you to come at least twice a week in order to maximize your potential.  If you can come more often, that’s even better - you can come to as many classes as are offered for your age group and/or rank.

  23. 8.Why do you bow so much?

  24. Bowing in Korean culture is a sign of respect.  In Kuk Sool, we bow to persons of higher rank than ourselves to show our respect for them (they will in turn bow to you).  We also bow to the Dojang, to signify that we are entering or leaving a special place.  And we bow at the beginning and end of a class in order to denote the moment of transition between our outside life and our martial arts focus.

  25. 9.What are the ranks in Kuk Sool & why do you have them?

  26. The ranks are White belt, Yellow belt, Blue belt, Red belt, Brown belt (White through Brown are considered Color Belts), Black/Brown belt and Black belt.  Within Black belt there are nine degrees or Dahn, each with its own title.  We use the ranks (and intermediate stripes for the kids at the Color Belt levels) as benchmarks in our training; each one has a curriculum that must be mastered before moving up to the next rank, and each belt gives us a goal to work towards, and a feeling of accomplishment when we achieve it.  We do not compete in order to advance - we are invited to test when we are deemed ready.

  27. 10.Do you spar in Kuk Sool?

  28. Sparring is one of the many aspects of our martial art - we practice “touch sparring” (contact is only with a touch of the hand or foot) which emphasizes speed and technique, and not hurting your opponent.  Students may spar after they have been training in Kuk Sool for at least a month.

  29. 11.How do I choose a martial arts school?

  30. There are many things to consider, but the most important are: do you like the instructors and their teaching style? do you like the atmosphere of the school? do the other students seem friendly and helpful to you or to each other?  does the style itself appeal to you?

  31. 12.What is Ki?

  32. Ki is thought to be an energy that can be harnessed in a person to increase one’s strength.  You do not need to believe in Ki in order to practice Kuk Sool - another way to look at it is that Ki is Focus.  When you focus your mind and your body to achieve a goal, you will be able to achieve it.
